Frost Brown Todd attorney, Brian S. Duba, recently attended the annual MULTILAW Academy that was held in Malahide, Ireland. Duba was the only U.S. based attorney to attend the global conference.
MULTILAW was founded in 1990 on the premise that a number of carefully selected independent law firms can work together to fulfill clients’ international needs. Today, it has over 6,000 lawyers in over 150 commercial centers throughout the world. MULTILAW member firms are carefully chosen. To be invited to membership, a firm must not only have the highest standards of ethics and quality, it must also be able to service the full needs of the typical international business client.
The MULTILAW Academy is an instructional program which introduces young lawyers from around the world to international transactions, cross-cultural negotiations and dispute resolution. Attendees at this year’s Academy included representatives of law firms from 16 countries spanning Eastern and Western Europe and the Americas. When asked about the most valuable aspect of the Academy, Duba responded, “The connections made with lawyers from across the globe was by far the most important, and valuable aspect of the Academy. While foreign law can be learned in a book, there is no substitute for the actual experience of working with, negotiating against, and learning from people from other countries and cultures.”
Duba adds, “The Academy was an extremely valuable experience. The emphasis on cross-border transactions, litigation, and cross-cultural negotiations provided a fantastic introduction into the similarities and differences important to representing a client in cross-border legal work.”
Duba is a senior associate who practices in the area of general corporate law and has assisted clients in investigating, documenting and executing private equity offerings, mergers, equity interest sales, asset sales, debt financings and other business transactions including mineral leases, coal supply agreements, natural gas purchase agreements and other purchase, sales and distributorship agreements. He also advises clients with respect to company formation and investor relations. Duba received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Kentucky, magna cum laude.
