Corporate Cincinnati needs lawyers
In the past two years, Madisonville-based Medpace has doubled its in-house legal staff from five to 10. General counsel Stephen Ewald anticipates hiring even more lawyers to keep up with the growing number of regulations faced by the $270 million a-year pharmaceutical and medical device research and development company.
Any other option, Ewald said, "it's not practical."
This is the same lesson learned at the 10,000-employee UC Health after creating a legal office in 2011 with one lawyer — general counsel Charlie Pangburn. Soon after, the company added two new lawyers, and within a year, it had saved almost $2 million in legal fees. That savings, and the growth of health care regulations, led UC Health to add three more attorneys and departments for compliance, risk and contract management.
