How big law firm merger could shake up Pittsburgh

The combination of Reed Smith LLP and Pepper Hamilton LLP stands to have a deep and wide-ranging impact on Pittsburgh’s legal and corporate sectors. The gloves are off at firms that aren't even in the deal.

Both law firms confirmed merger talks on Tuesday. Pittsburgh-founded Reed Smith is four times the size of Philadelphia-based Pepper Hamilton with 1,890 attorneys and has twice the number of offices at 26 as well as an international footprint. Locally, Reed Smith is No. 1 among law offices ranked by the number of lawyers while Pepper is No. 21. But they serve a similar corporate clientele and, at least locally, have done some high-profile hires from each other in recent years.
