The composition of the Ohio Supreme Court will change after this fall’s election. Do you expect it to affect the outcome of cases?
There should not be a material change in the outcome of cases. Two of the seven justices will change, as new justices replace two retiring justices. Politically, the court could remain a 6-1 Republican majority, or change to a 5-2 or 4-3 majority. Demographically, two retiring male and female justices will be replaced by either a male and a female, or two males, and the racial composition will be unchanged. The chief justice will be re-elected as she is unopposed. The four candidates for the two contested seats have pledged that they will follow the law and not “legislate from the bench.”
