The B Corp comes to Kentucky: here's what you need to know

As of July 1, 2017, the traditional for-profit business corporation has a sibling – the benefit corporation. Earlier this year Kentucky became the 32nd state to adopt legislation allowing corporations to give the pursuit of social benefits equal priority with the pursuit of profit.

A “public benefit corporation” is a for-profit corporation that is intended to produce one or more public benefits and to operate in a responsible manner. The roster of companies now operating as benefit corporations (or “B Corps” as they are more commonly known) includes Ben and Jerry’s, Method, Etsy, New Belgium Brewing, Patagonia, and Gardener’s Supply Company.
