Katie is counsel in the labor department of Frost Brown Todd. She brings the experience of four years as in-house employment law counsel and even more years in private practice to assist employers in avoiding and defending labor and employment law claims. Katie concentrates her practice on labor and employment law issues, including litigation, arbitrations, conducting investigations, and advising employers on compliance with various federal, state and local employment laws. She was integrally involved in the successful mediation of a case involving over 300 plaintiffs with exposure exceeding $500 million and has experience representing a Fortune 500 company before the United States Department of Labor in over 40 wage and hour audits.

Katie rejoined the firm in 2009 after serving as in-house Employment Counsel for Kindred Healthcare for over four years. At Kindred Healthcare, she advised executives and managers in the Health Services Division, which included approximately 230 nursing homes in 27 states, on compliance with various state and federal laws relating to employment. In addition to her counseling role, Katie managed Kindred’s Charges of Discrimination nationally, conducted numerous investigations, and developed various training programs, including a program entitled Preventing Harassment in the Workplace to comply with California’s state law requirements regarding harassment training.

Katie possesses vast knowledge of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and 1991, the Kentucky Civil Rights Act (KRS Chapter 344), the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (and the Older Worker Benefits Protection Act), the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, Kentucky's wage and hour laws (KRS Chapter 337), and various other employment laws, torts and contract causes of action.

A Review of Lockouts: Recent Decisions Regarding Lockouts and a Discussion of International Paper Co., 319 NLRB 1253, enf. Denied, 115 F.3d 1045 (D.C. Cir. 1997). Presented at the 1998 Mid-Winter Meeting of the American Bar Association Committee on the Development of the Law Under the National Labor Relations Act.

Recent Developments Under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Presented this paper, lead discussion, and answered questions from local employment law practitioners regarding ADA issues at a Continuing Legal Education program sponsored by the Louisville Bar Association, Labor and Employment Section, in February 1998.

Record-keeping and Posting Requirements under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Presented this paper, lead discussion, and answered questions from business owners, executives, and Human Resources professionals at a seminar sponsored by the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce in April 1998, March 1999, and March 2000, entitled "Wage and Hour Laws: Is Compliance Possible."

Effective Employee Handbooks. Presented this paper, lead discussion, and answered questions from business owners, executives, and Human Resources professionals at a seminar sponsored by Lorman Education Services in June 1998, entitled "Kentucky Employment and Labor Law."

Practical, Strategic, and Ethical Considerations in Investigations of Harassment Claims. Presented this paper, lead discussion and answered questions from local employment law and other practitioners regarding harassment investigations at a Continuing Legal Education program sponsored by the Louisville Bar Association, Labor and Employment Section, in June 1999.

Safely Negotiating the Hidden Pitfalls Posed by the Fair Labor Standards Act WHen Administering the Family and Medical Leave Act. Presented this paper, lead discussion, and answered questions from business owners, executives, and Human Resources professionals at a seminar in September 1999, sponsored by the Council on Education in Management entitled "Family and medical Leave Act Update 1999".
