Karen Laymance is Director of Recruiting and Legal Personnel at Frost Brown Todd LLC where she has been employed for more than 30 years.  She has over 25 years of experience in the field of legal recruitment and professional development. 

In her current position, Karen has firm-wide responsibility for developing, implementing, managing and coordinating the firm’s attorney and law student recruitment program designed to identify, attract and retain a high quality and diverse legal work force.

Karen interacts with Department Chairs and Practice Group Leaders to identify current and future staffing needs, initiates lateral searches, prescreens law student and lateral attorney applications for employment and ensures that appropriate correspondence is produced and that appropriate records are maintained, directs the planning and managing of the summer associate program, supervises and trains attorney recruitment staff giving direction, guidance, and feedback.

Karen also supports various firm committees in the following areas: administering the attorney and summer associate on boarding, orientation and mentoring programs; managing the First Year Associate program; coordinating the associate/counsel evaluation process; assisting with the membership selection process; assisting with recommendations for the associate salary adjustments and associate bonus program; assisting firm initiatives to enhance diversity in hiring and retention of attorneys; supporting the Women’s Initiative’s projects; fielding legal personnel issues that arise on a day-to-day basis; ensuring appropriate documentation relating to attorney related personnel matters; and developing and managing annual recruiting and attorney functions budget projections.

Karen maintains active membership in the legal profession associations, including NALP.  She participates in bar association minority law student receptions and programs, and reviews trade journals and periodicals to ensure FBT stays abreast of industry norms, benchmarks, and best practices.
