Douglas M. Hall
Doug is an accomplished attorney with experience in all aspects of federal commercial litigation with a primary emphasis on intellectual property litigation. His experience covers diverse subject matter, including industrial control equipment, video signal enhancement, 3G, cellular telephone, jet engine, machine and consumer tools, construction equipment, e-commerce applications, computer implemented control systems and medical devices. Doug was a member of a trial team that successfully litigated and licensed a family of patents in video display enhancement technology, achieving settlements and licenses with companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Sony, Apple, Dell, Toshiba, Microsoft and Google. He was also part of a four-person trial team that achieved a multimillion-dollar willful patent infringement verdict against Thomson Corporation in the Western District of Pennsylvania.
As part of his practice, Doug formulates strategies for the enforcement and management of clients’ intellectual property portfolios that are tailored for each technology and industry. In addition, he is also responsible for evaluating cases, negotiating licenses and settlements, and litigating all phases of intellectual property litigation, including pre-trial discovery, Markman proceedings, trials and appeals to the federal circuit. In addition, Doug is a barrister in the Western District of Pennsylvania Intellectual Property Inn of Court.
Muniauction v. Thomson (W.D. PA) - Trial counsel for Muniauction in successful two-week patent infringement trial against Thomson involving electronic auctioning of municipal bonds.
TLC v. Google (E.D. TX) - Represented TLC in patent infringement action involving two patents covering Google Search Engine and Google Earth technologies. Successfully briefed and argued Markman hearing and defeated summary judgment motions. Case successfully settled on the eve of pre-trial hearing.
Black & Decker v. Bosch (N.D. Ill) - Represented Black & Decker in patent infringement action against involving work-site radio charger technology. Received favorable infringement verdict at trial.
Safe Bed v. Kinetic Concepts, Inc. (N.D. Ill) - Represented KCI in defending against patent infringement action involving medical device technology. Successfully briefed and argued Markman. Case settled favorably after Markman ruling.
TLC v. Lexmark and Dell (N.D. Ill) - Represented TLC in patent infringement action involving three patents covering resolution enhancement technology for televisions and printers. Successfully briefed and argued Markman hearing and defeated summary judgment motions. Case successfully settled on the eve of pre-trial hearing.
Britesmile v. P&G (S.D. OH) - Represented Britesmile in patent infringement action involving tooth-whitening technology. Successfully argued Markman and defeated summary judgment. Case successfully settled on the eve of pre-trial hearing.
New Medium v. Barco, Miranda, Philips, LG, Toshiba, and Sony (N.D. Ill) - Represented TLC in successful patent infringement action involving ten patents covering resolution enhancement technology for televisions and printers. Successfully briefed and argued Markman hearing and defeated summary judgment motions. Case successfully settled as to final defendants on the eve of trial.
Crystal Image Technology v. Mitsubishi and Tektronix (W.D. PA) - Represented CIT in patent infringement action involving DLP resolution enhancement technology. Case settled against Tektronix.
TLC v. Microsoft and Vizio (N.D. Ill) - Represented TLC in patent infringement action involving four patents covering video signal technology for televisions and videogame machines. Briefed and argued Markman.
Taymac v. Thomas & Betts (D. Ariz.) - Represented Taymac in patent infringement action involving electrical outlet technology. Successfully briefed and argued against summary judgment. Received a favorable settlement.
R+L Carriers v. Enterprise Information Solutions (S.D. OH) - Represented EIS in defending against a MDL patent infringement action involving on-board trucking technology.
McClatchey v. Associated Press (W.D. PA) - Lead trial counsel for McClatchey in copyright infringement action involving the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Successfully defeated summary judgment motions. Case successfully settled on the eve of trial.
Davis v. DreamWorks (S.D. Fla.) - Represented Davis in copyright infringement, unjust enrichment, and breach of contract claim involving the movie Madagascar.
