Russell practices in the area of government relations, internal/compliance investigations, and white collar criminal defense, having over a decade of experience working in both federal law enforcement and on Capitol Hill. Most recently, Russell was Senior Advisor and Legal Counsel to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Prior to his five years on Senator McConnell’s team, Russell served as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and was the Briefing Coordinator to two Attorneys General at the U.S. Department of Justice.

As Senior Advisor and Legal Counsel for the U.S. Senate Majority Leader, Russell provided counsel to Senator McConnell and his staff on a broad range of ethics and compliance matters, including the development of internal office ethics policies, conducting staff compliance training, annual preparation of the Leader’s Senate Financial Disclosure Report.  He advocated for Kentucky constituents and businesses with myriad federal executive branch agencies on behalf of Senator McConnell. Russell also served as policy advisor for judiciary, law enforcement, transportation, telecommunications, and financial services portfolios, and conducted vetting of candidates for Kentucky’s Article III federal judicial vacancies.

While an FBI Special Agent, Russell investigated a diverse portfolio of national security, white collar, and violent crime matters. He served as FBI Indianapolis Division’s Back-Up Chief Division Counsel, was a certified FBI Crisis (Hostage) Negotiator, and served as an on-record Media Spokesperson for the FBI’s Indianapolis Division. He was elected as the only Special Agent representative to the FBI Director’s Employees with Disabilities Advisory Committee. Russell was temporarily assigned to the National Joint Terrorism Task Force and volunteered for a 2007 assignment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Anbar Province, Republic of Iraq.

Russell assists companies and individuals in navigating the increasingly complex legislative and regulatory environments at both the federal and state levels. He has the ability to render investigative assistance through leveraging the unique skills and relationships of a former FBI Special Agent to obtain competitive and due-diligence intelligence in a discrete and professional manner.
