Informed Generosity: Donations to Foreign Charities
by Jan De Beer

When a distant nation is devastated, our country gives generously.  In the wake of the 2004 tsunami and the recent earthquake in Pakistan and Central Asia, the United States government has given billions of dollars in aid.  In addition, international charitable organizations often ask American citizens and corporations to supplement their government’s contribution with private donations. The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University estimates that private donations amount to over $1 billion for tsunami relief alone. International philanthropy is a multi-billion-dollar business, and one which sustains many developing economies.

P&G Center Confirms Costa Rica as Favorable Choice for Global Companies
by Joseph J. Dehner

When Procter & Gamble embarked on an outsourcing of non-core functions and a shared services program, it sought locations in three global regions to operate HR, accounting and other critical functions.  Rather than spreading these operations among many local offices, it wanted three global centers - one in the Americas.  To handle the Americas, P&G ranked cities on the basis of quality and cost.  Beating out all others, San Jose, Costa Rica won the competition.  Today P&G has almost 2,000 Costa Rican employees handling mission-critical functions for North and South American operations.  Hewlett Packard employs many others in support of these operations.
