People to Know: Stephen Chappelear

How did you get into this profession? 
Who doesn’t want to be a knight in shining armor, coming to the aid of those in distress? To be Atticus Finch? Once I figured out that I had some skills in oratory, writing, negotiating and problem-solving, a career as a practicing attorney was an easy choice. I have loved every minute of it.

The composition of the Ohio Supreme Court will change after this fall’s election. Do you expect it to affect the outcome of cases? 
There should not be a material change in the outcome of cases. Two of the seven justices will change, as new justices replace two retiring justices. Politically, the court could remain a 6-1 Republican majority, or change to a 5-2 or 4-3 majority. Demographically, two retiring male and female justices will be replaced by either a male and a female, or two males, and the racial composition will be unchanged. The chief justice will be re-elected as she is unopposed. The four candidates for the two contested seats have pledged that they will follow the law and not “legislate from the bench.”
