Monica practices at the intersection of content and technology. Her media clients (including TV and radio stations, magazines, newspapers, bloggers, and documentary filmmakers) communicate news content through websites, tweets and a variety of social media platforms. Monica helps them shape their content, including online content, in light of evolving case law regarding defamation, privacy, trademark infringement and copyright infringement when content is communicated via the internet. She also helps her clients gain access to courtrooms so they can tweet and live stream trials and legal proceedings in real time. Her knowledge of federal and state open records laws enables her clients to gain access to the electronic records of public agencies so the public is better informed about the public’s business. She enforces her media clients’ First Amendment rights through litigation. She manages large trademark portfolios for U.S. and international brands, and protects and enforces trademarks worldwide. Her litigation experience includes defending against or prosecuting claims of false advertising, unfair competition, trademark infringement and copyright infringement. Her expertise helps clients navigate the ever-changing legal landscape regarding fair use of copyrighted material.
