Robert Smith has more than 25 years of experience representing clients in the amusement and entertainment business. He currently serves as outside general counsel for the State Fair of Texas, a position he has held since 2004. Through his long-standing representation of the State Fair of Texas, Mr. Smith has an extensive background covering a wide variety of related areas of the law, including corporate governance, nonprofit and tax-exempt issues, public venues, sports and leisure, amusement rides and games, insurance and business transactions. His diverse practice as a business transactional lawyer has also led to more than 20 years of experience in the oil and gas industry guiding clients through all aspects of their business cycles, including entity formation, acquisitions, due diligence, contracts and sale transactions.

    • Negotiated and drafted 25-year lease agreement between State Fair of Texas and City of Dallas for lease of Fair Park for the annual State Fair of Texas event
    • Negotiated and drafted 20-year game agreement between State Fair of Texas, University of Texas at Austin and University of Oklahoma for the annual TX-OU Football Game held in the Cotton Bowl Stadium
    • Negotiated and drafted numerous athletic event agreements with major college athletic programs (University of Texas, University of Oklahoma, Texas Tech University, Baylor University, Texas A&M, United States Air Force Academy, United States Military Academy, Louisiana Tech and Oklahoma State University)
    • Negotiated and drafted numerous location agreements, materials releases, license agreements and appearance releases with many television show (NFL Films, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Conan O’Brien Show, Queen of the South, Real Housewives of Dallas, Dude Perfect, Giant America, Chopped, Ridiculous Cakes, Carnival Kings, Deep Fried Masters, Shipping Wars, Carnival Eats, Little Women: Dallas)
    • Prevailed in major constitutional case Darrel Rundus v. City of Dallas; State Fair of Texas, decided by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit
    • Provided legal counsel for numerous transactions involving the acquisition of oil & gas properties (working interest, royalty interest and mineral interest)
