New Deadline for Medicare Reporting

November 24, 2010 By Nicholas C. Pappas

On November 12, 2010, Medicare extended the deadline to report one-time settlement or judgment payments to Medicare beneficiaries by one year. Payments made after October 1, 2011, will have to be reported the first calendar quarter of 2012. The extension only applies to one-time payments, and does not apply to situations involving ongoing responsibility for medical payments (generally worker's compensation and no fault insurance situations).

Medicare also extended by one year the interim dollar reporting thresholds, as follows:

Total Payment Obligation to
Claimant (TPOC) Date
Threshold Below Which Payments Are Exempt from Reporting
Prior to January 1, 2013 $5,000.00
January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013 $2,000.00
January 1, 2014 – December 31, 2014 $600.00
After January 1, 2015 No Threshold
